Poco's 2005 'Bareback At Big Sky' is an honest, wonderful glimpse of a captured unplugged Paul Cotton / Rusty Young led Poco concert. Well recorded, heartfelt performance and songs that are timeless. Longtime Poco Bassist/Songwriter/Vocalist Jack Sundrud and veteran drummer George Lawrence rounds out the band with exceptional musicianship.

Original Poco founder Rusty Young and longtime member Paul Cotton are in fine form here. Their songs are as good as any in their genre (Eagles, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Alabama, etc) and the stripped down arrangements prove that exact point. Cotton's 'Every Time I Hear That Train' is one of his recent exceptional compositions and his voice is in awesome form as it was in the 1970's or 1980's.

Probably the weakest part of this recording is Rusty Young's frail voice on this particular night. The example of that here is "Save A Corner Of Your Heart For Me". Of course, Rusty has always been a masterful instrumentalist and eventually became a great songwriter. He has taken up the lead vocal spot that the departed Timothy B Schmidt and Richie Furay emptied; but often doesn't quite hit the mark of his departed band mates. Don't get me wrong, his songs are excellent compositions!

Other highlights include all of Paul Cotton’s songs, especially “Barbados”. Jack Sundrud’s “Shake It” is another incredible track; with Jack very often being overlooked in his long tenure in Poco as a guitarist, bassist, songwriter and vocalist.

The CD fittingly ends with the Buffalo Springfield (Neil Young composition) “On The Way Home” "Bareback At Big Sky" is an honest portrait of a live Poco performance as a quartet and one of the last with Paul Cotton. I love this CD. Please buy it!
