I don't usually care much about compilations, but when it's a Residents compilation, it's a whole different story. They always try to add something special to each and every one of their releases, and that's another reason for me to love them. Petting Zoo, for example, contained some of their most ear-friendly songs, and that makes it a perfect introduction to newbies.

And then there's my two favorite compilations of all time, Morning Music and Beautiful Eyes. Morning Music contains The Residents' most upbeat songs, and you're supposed to listen to it in the morning to get the full experience.

Beautiful Eyes is the opposite. It contains The Residents' prettiest music, and there's even some exclusive tunes as well! It's supposed to be heard at night. I've also found that it's perfect for relaxing and calming yourself down. I find this and Animal Lover to be very similar in terms of mood and atmosphere.

I think the best part about both of these compilations is the track listing. It's so... unusual to find songs from Have a Bad Day and Intermission, or The King & Eye and Animal Lover, in the same release. There's also an excerpt from Sam's Enchanted Evening, and the best part: the complete Not Available piano piece that plays during the Porcupine's parts in the background! It can't get any better than that!

Overall, Morning Music and Beautiful Eyes are the best compilations I have ever heard, and one of the main reasons is that it doesn't restrict itself to the greatest albums, or the most influential, or the most relevant. They are simply listings of The Residents' best moments. Of course, some of them are going to be left out, but in the end, it doesn't really matter, because the song order just has so much thought put into it, it's almost obligatory to listen to the whole thing. Even if you're not a fan of compilations, I highly recommend you get these two downloads before they're gone forever.
