The Kinks first album and one of the inaugural shots of the British Invasion. This album like many pre-Sgt Pepper albums is a varied collection of singles, b-sides and filler. Speaking of filler there is quite a bit. The lame version of "Long Tall Sally" comes nowhere close to doing the Little Richard version justice. Oddly enough it was chosen as the Kink's second single. Upon that single's failing the Kink's record label gave them an ultimatum, if the next single did not do well they would be dropped. Luckily enough the Kink's popped out one of the greatest songs of all-time as there next release, the libido dripping "You Really Got Me". This pre-punk, garage rock blast of three chords gave the Kinks their first success and made them international stars. Following that song they came up with the similar but still great "All Day and All Night". Good but not classic songs include the much better cover of Chuck Berry's "Beautiful Delilah" and the infectious Ray Davies' penned "So Mystifying". The Kinks first album may not be a classic like their later releases, but it makes up for its misteps with some all-time classic songs and unbridled energy.
