Katy Perry denies that this catchy synthpop tune is about her recent split from husband Russell Brand, saying that it was written two years ago. But the lyrics to "Part of Me" are rather apt for her current circumstances: "So you can keep the diamond ring, It don't mean nothing anyway", etc. Take away the irony of these break-up lyrics and it is just another energetic girl-power pop song from a singer I don't mind hearing occasionally on the radio, but would never buy an entire album from. "Part of Me" has that typical Katy Perry get-up-and-dance feel. Nice, not extraordinary.
Now, I've just watched the video for this song and it makes things "Part of Me" little more interesting. I'd read that there was some controversy over so-called Marines propaganda. That angle of the vid is a little extreme. Anyway. It's nice to see Katy as a 'regular girl' instead of the glam and glitz we usual get, and the transformation into Marine is pretty dramatic. A little over-the-top for me but I'll still enjoy the song when it comes on the radio.
