The first few times I heard "Pumped Up Kicks" on the radio the depth of it kind of escaped my notice, it has an electronica sound with an upbeat quality about it that really belies the lyrics. Bravo Foster the People for creating this unexpected piece of indie pop! I eventually turned up the radio and was surprised at the horrible, sad, shocking story it tells. To me it is about a boy who is neglected by his father and, finding his father's gun, uses it to take revenge on the other kids who have grown up with more privileges than he. The "pumped up kicks" are, from what I have read, a "cool" pair of shoes representative of these things he has never had.
