California-based singer/songwriter Michael Franks releases CD's not as frequent as he did in the 1970's & 1980's when he was an artist for Warner Brothers Records. "Rendevous In Rio" is a 2006 release full of all the great qualities of his earlier 1970's work. Leaning on Brazilian rhythms and melodies similar to the late great Antonio Carlos Jobim, there is no artist (American or otherwise) out there quite like Franks.

"Samba Do Soho" is a fine example of Frank's earlier work from his "Tiger In The Rain" era. Lilting flute along with Veronica Nunn's harmony reminds us of Michael singing with Flora Purim in his earlier days. "Songbirds" is the standout track here. The song is a tear jerking tribute to Franks' singer/songwriter (and former neighbor & labelmate) Randy Van Warmer. If there was ever a 'best of' Michael Franks collection, this song should be on it.

"Hearing Take Five" is a song where lyrically Franks' goes back in time remembering first hearing Dave Brubeck's classic tune. I can even relate to that! The title track "Rendevous In Rio" is another great twist of a Brazilian samba where the players really get a workout

The musicianship on this CD is outstanding. I would certainly recommend this LP if you like Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66, Antonio Carlos Jobim or even James Taylor. Fabulous music by a fabulous artist! Buy it!!
