Sufjan Stevens became the darling of the indie music scene for his articulate and intelligent lyrics, gentle soothing vocals and symphonic instrumentation. Mostly he became an indie star for his sheer originality. While the gentle vocals and folky banjo riffs are gone from this album, for the most part (the first track being the obvious exception), he still maximizes his greatest strength: original lyrics, melody lines and instrumentation. No one sounds like Sufjan and that's what matters most of all. So his increased use of electronic instruments, clashing harmonies and less overtly Christian lyrics shouldn't keep you away from The Age of Adz just because you're not used to them. Play it through a few times and you'll realize that Sufjan Stevens is still the musical genius he always was: pushing boundaries musically while delivering moving, exciting songs that aren't like anything else you'll hear. I highly, highly recommend this album to anyone who is willing to get past the superficial differences from his past work and see the shining similarities beneath the surface. It is truly worth the effort!
