Using the same recipe as with Shades of Deep Purple, that is to say a mix of covers from contemporary pop-rock standards (Kentucky Woman, from Neil Diamond, We Can Work It Out, from The Beatles, River Deep Mountain High, from Ike & Tina Turner) and original compositions, Deep Purple continues exploring new sounds. This second album features remarkable tracks, demonstrating their ability for instrumental arrangement, atmosphere rendition. Wring That Neck constitutes the second major standard of the band (after Hush from the first album). But Shield and Anthem are two little jewels that deserve to be listened at. I would recommand The Book of Taliesyn as the best of the three albums of the first Deep Purple line-up (1968 - 1969).
