The album opens with the epic Reel Around The Fountain which was to be the first of many controversial Smith’s songs due to gross misinterpretations by the public. While Morrissey was trying to be ironic some alleged the song to condone child abuse.
This is followed with the spiteful You’ve Got Everything Now. Miserable Lie is quite a bizarre track that starts off all slow and quiet led by Morrissey’s deep vocals, then speeds up and sees him singing in a high pitched squeal. This Charming Man is without a doubt one of the greatest pop tunes ever written. It is catchy, upbeat and compacted into just over 2 and a half minutes. At the same time it has that signature “Smiths” feel to it that makes it stand out from any other 80’s pop tune. Hand In Glove, the band’s debut single is yet another classic, opening with the lyrics 'hand in glove, the sun shines out of our behinds'! What Difference Does It Make is another catchy and slightly rocking tune. With such high quality singles the Smith’s showed that they were capable of writing great three-minute radio tracks as well as their dark and dreary epics.
From start to finish this is a flawless record that paved the way for bigger and better things for Morrissey and Johnny Marr both during and post the Smiths.
