Violet Hill – a make or break for Coldplay. It had been four years since X&Y had been released after which the band announced to the horror of the fans that they would be taking a break. Chris Martin explained that he wanted people to be proud to like Coldplay and that the band probably couldn’t get any bigger, so they were wanted to be better. Motivational words indeed!

The track begins with at atmospheric hazy sound, which builds steadily until the vocals of Chris Martin introduce a strong guitar riff with steady drums producing a military style beat that forms the rest of the song. The song is actually an anti war protest combined with lyrics such as “a fox became God” - referring to fox news. The whole song feels confident and lively. Basically its brilliant.

The original song was actually released free of charge on the Coldplay website (before you rush off to the website to get it free it is no longer available!) though it still reached number 8 in the UK singles charts.

A few versions of the single were released, the one caprice have acquired comes with an extra track not available on any other albums (a spell a rebel yell). The single was also released with a brilliant acoustic version of Lost! Entitled Lost? But have no fear! It is available right here on Caprice on the Lost! EP
