The apex of Van Halen's work. With the addition of the synth-pop songs "1984" and "Jump", VH proved that they could incorporate new wave elements with hard rock and make soemthing uniquely their own. David Lee's vocals on "Jump" channel Roger Daltrey of the Who; his swaggering yet precise vocals evoke a tunefulness not found in his previous and subsequent work.
Not that Van Halen forgot how to do hard rock; "Panama", "Top Jimmy", "Drop Dead Legs", and (especially) "Hot For Teacher" underscore that point. In fact, the only song that doesn't work here is "I'll Wait", with it's plodding, ineffective synths and David Lee Roth's overwrought vocals. Otherwise, this album tops anything by the band before or since.
