In terms of genre-defining albums, this one stamps its mark well on the whole chilled-djent offering. Altered State is a massive progression from 'One', the UK 5-piece's previous release.
A new singer and a new approach to the construction of not only the songs, but the album as a whole, bring Tesseract into a new league. Altered State is split into 4 parts - Of Matter, Of Mind, Of Reality, Of Energy - and each one has its only feel and flow. Its a concept album of sorts, and was a highlight of 2013.
This band is for fans of Periphery, Meshuggah, Karnivool, The Safety Fire.
Stand out song would be Singularity.

TesseracT took forever to release their debut--2011's gorgeous classic "One". After losing not only one of the greatest young vocalists of the decade in Daniel Tompkins and then yet another vocalist Elliot Coleman many were wondering whether TesseracT would be finished. Well the verdict is in and "Altered State" with new vocalist Ashe O'Hara is another surprise classic in the genre of progressive metal. O'Hara has the voice of an angel, just don't expect any screams or aggression from this release. It's instrumentally as heavy as ever on cuts like "Nocturne" and "Retrospect" but the vocals are angelic light and airy throughout--adding a nice contrast. TesseracT are built on rhythmic changes and building massive soundscapes and in that respect "Altered State" is no different than "One". But this new album sets the stage for what promises to be a massive career. I recommend this to fans of all rock with a brain.
