Also by George Benson
Benson entered the 1990s with another jazz set, this time a big band album with his vocals and guitar backed by The Count Basie Orchestra directed by Frank Foster. He had recorded in this style before with “Beyond The Sea (La Mer)” from 20/20.
Benson is in fine voice throughout, essaying the standards “Without A Song”, “On Green Dolphin Street”, “I Only Have Eyes For You” and “Skylark”, He duets with band vocalist Carmen Bradford on “How Do You Keep The Music Playing” to fine effect, scats with aplomb on “Ready Now That You Are” and features his guitar on the closing “Basie’s Bag”.
“Baby Workout” mixes electronic and horns backing but works well nonetheless. There are two visits to the Nat King Cole songbook in “Portrait Of Jennie” (not featuring the Basie band) and “Walkin’ My Baby Back Home”. Recommended.
