This is the third solo album to come from former Snug front man Ed Harcourt. In this album Ed continues to demonstrate his strong ability as a solo musician.
The album opens with the beautiful and catchy pop-tune ‘bittersweetheart.’ ‘Ghost write’ is a rather bizarre track that possesses a rather chilling atmosphere and yet is rather poppy at the same time. ‘The birds will sing for us’ is a pretty and slightly melancholy track that closes with some infectious horns. ‘Sister Renee’ is another highlight that consists of Ed’s voice, his piano and some harmonica sounds in the background.
The music on this album is fairly simple but very effective. Ed Harcourt possesses a very strong voice. At times he is really putting his heart into it such as ‘Watching the sun come up’ while there are times when he’s more laid back such as the slow ballad ‘Bleed a river deep.’ The album closes amazingly with the cold, dark and very beautiful epic ‘From every sphere.’
This is a terrific album from Ed Harcourt. It’s blend of poppy and darker tunes work well together to create an interesting and pleasurable listen.
