"Homegrown" is the second studio album by the Britpop band Dodgy, and saw the development of their earlier pop-punk sound which had featured largely in their debut release.
Opening with "Staying out for the summer, " the album immediately wins favour with the listener lending the ear a bright melody with positive lyrics; -a popular hit which still gets the occasional radio slot twenty years later.
Following on from this comes "Melodies haunt you," a track which flows well and continues the momentum set by the previous song. The brass accompaniment ties in beautifully with this well produced number and caps off an impressive finale.
The next couple of tracks offer some searching lyrics and the the positively upbeat "One day" is quite uplifting.
The album remains tight throughout the next few tracks, and even the slightly calmer "We are together" maintains some of the tempo.
"Waiting for the day" is a very catchy number and with some great lyrics and unique progressions it leads beautifully into the melancholic "What have I done wrong?" -A nice little acoustic track which leaves just enough time to strap yourself in for the big one...
The final track "Grassman" is the kind of song which leaves you scratching your head wondering why nobody has heard of it. It is truly epic. From the soft piano & vocals at the start, to the dramatic choruses, entrancing guitar solo, superb middle eight and big finish; it is a captivating conclusion to a magnificent album.
