Though they are from England, A for me is that one So-Cal pop.punk band you can unashamedly enjoy. Their albums have the same mix of hard edge riffing and pop hooks of that sub genre, but their inventiveness and production is what sets them apart.
You get a perfect dose of this early in the album with Foghorn, where the guitars are perfectly layered and textured over a really catchy chorus. The song is played at a blistering pace then abruptly stops for and beautiful guitar figure with a tone to kill for. There are so many moments like that throughout the album that you begin to realize, you're listening more to a band with studio craft chops, than anything else.
Just check the change is the track No1. It follows a similar pattern to a lot of songs on the album. It comes out of the gate in double time, only to drop into a complete left turn with a dynamic acoustic break, and a little further on employs an organ briefly. In fact most of the rockers on this album refuse to settle for just the riff and hook, and in addition incorporates lots of nice musical touches over the whole album.
Also if you have any interest in this brand of music, Five in the Morning might just be your lost anthem, and is likely the best chorus on the album.
A have released 4 or 5 great albums but for me this one is their best.
