With "In Through The Out Door", Led Zeppelin adds prog rock influences at a time when it really wasn't very popular to do so. Except for the distinctive vocals of Robert Plant, the songs "Carouselambra", "South Bound Saurez", and "In The Evening" very well could have been outtakes by fellow Atlantic Records bandmates Yes. This is not necessarily a bad thing, unless one is so enamored of an album like Led Zeppelin IV that they can't mentally "allow" the band to evolve and change.

To show it isn't all highbrow and serious, the Zep cuts loose with some faux country shenanigans on "Hot Dog". If you're looking for the more classic Zep sound, this album probably isn't for you; however, if you're looking to hear the trend-defying craftsmanship of John Bonham, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, and (especially) John Paul Jones), this album is heartily recommended.
