With his fifth solo album, the exceptionally talented rapper Lecrae produces another album that is pleasing to the ears and heart in Overdose. Even if you don’t believe in God, you have to respect and appreciate Lecrae’s gift. His lyrics are pin-point accurate with Scripture and his beats are off the hook. You see his creativity in the “Battle Song” with, (I was Taylored to snatch the mic Swiftly like Kanye did, And lay it down for the King like a sleigh bed”), while revealing his faith in “Chase That (Ambition)” with, (“[Lucifer] lies to us all, told Adam he could ball, "why you following God when you can go get it all?", I tell you what's better, or better yet worse, chasing your own glory while doing the Lord's work”). Lecrae shows versatility in one of my favorite songs on the album with “Chase That.” There’s a violin ballad introduction before talking about finding purpose and satisfaction for your soul. After one listen, you know exactly where Lecrae’s beliefs lay. If you are a believer, you will be encouraged and challenged. If you are not a believer, it will give you hope and answers to life’s biggest questions. I love the story Lecrae shares in the “The Good Life.” The lyrics go, (“Thought he got a life sentence but he really got life, He done read that bible twice….Knew he'd die in prison but was livin' for another life …Now he lay awake in prison prayin' for his homies in the streets, 'Cause truth is, he's free-er than they gon' ever be”). It’s no surprise that pastors around the country are listening to and sharing Lecrae’s ministry. His lyrics are anointing and hits home of the soul. Real life topics (e.g. relationships, finding your purpose in life) are shown in Overdose and Lecrae sheds light on them with The Light being the answer.
