English prog rock had its roots firmly grounded in Englsh early 70's music. Amid a host of mediocre albums sprung some true classics that established certain bands as the succesful artists they were to become. 1973 saw such an album, born out of middle class England, and establishing a bench mark hard to follow. After 4 pretty average albums, Genesis produced Selling England By The Pound. A quintessentially English album in sound, humour, and construction, it took progressive rock to a whole new realm. From the haunting intro of Dancing With The Moonlit Knight to the fading epitaph of Aisle Of Plenty, the listener is taken on a sublime journey of irony, absurdity and political sattire. Its no coincidence that even after many years, the Genesis stage show comprised so much from this album...Firth Of Fifth, I Know What I Like, The Cinema Show, and lesser epics as The Battle Of Epping Forest. There is hidden a short gem in More Fool Me which sees Phil Collins take over vocals...a shape of things to come! Selling England is a true classic and deserves its place in every record collection. The finest Genesis album ever produced, maybe one of the finest albums ever produced.
