Strangely enough, I first became aware of Mustasch through a YouTube video – I think it was them performing at Wacken. There was something very primal, very metal about them and I loved the vocals – the screams, the power and the energy.
I am pleased to report that all those trade-marks qualities than make the Swedes a power-house of a band are in this new album, Silent Killer. You may have seen the heavy-metal, twin guitar-driven video for Liberta – which is heavy, fast, melodic and pumps you up full of that ‘go get ‘em’ attitude you need on a Monday or after a very, very long week.
Lawbreaker is another favourite of mine – a song telling the tale of personal failure in a way everyone can empathise with. The slow burner intro builds and builds until the full band assault breaks through like an armoured vehicle smashing a brick wall. What I particularly like is that ‘no, I am not perfect but I own my mistakes’ feel of the song which is manly and macho without being self-indulgent.
Fire is another favourite which features the inimitable Hank von Helvete on the second verse and chorus. You just have to listen this with the volume turned up to 11 in order to feel the drum intro reverberate through your chest cavity and the rumbling bass shake the ground, your car – your flat. True heavy metal production which is clear, yet not ridiculously over polished so that the songs have their bite and carry you with them.
Another great album from what is becoming my favourite modern metal band.
