On their 5th album, As I Lay Dying finally manages to get everything right. The Powerless Rise takes all the elements of AILD's signature sound and bumps them up to a level I never imagined they would reach. Opener "Beyond Our Suffering" shows the band at the top of their game and at their most aggressive, hardly ever slowing down over the near 45 minute run time. The singing vocals have improved several-fold, making it a catchier album despite the emphasis on brutality. Lyrically, Tim Lambesis has never sounded more focused, and The Powerless Rise is obviously Christian but never too preachy. Metalcore simply did not get any better than this in 2010 and while I never was a huge fan of AILD's prior work, I recommended The Powerless Rise without any hesitation to any fans of metal. Great album.
Can't take this CD out! As I lay dying is one of the few bands that seems to be getting better with time. LOVE this, at first, it seemed every other song was killer. Kinda funny how it worked out but after listening to it a few times, they all grew on me and I'm convinced there isn't a single bad song. Buy this CD!
