"The Upside" is the fourth full album released by the Philadelphia based band The Wonder Years. Formed in 2005, this band piggy backed on the fame and success of the new wave of pop-punk bands before them such as Good Charlotte and Simple Plan. There is something for everyone on this album, starting with the very first track "My Last Semester". It has the typical upbeat rhythm using distinct drum fills and double bass pedals that are very common in the pop-punk genre. Tight harmonies and an up and down melodic structure сompliments the guitars and drums. "Dynamite Shovel" and "Logan Circle" follow suit. There is plenty of variety in the album making it easy to listen through top to bottom. The song styles are spaced and mixed up allowing the listener to enjoy the ride. Songs like "Hey Thanks" and the "campfire" version (a playful term to describe an acoustic version of a song) of "Dynamite Shovel" show the softer side of the band as they paint another picture with their instrumentation and distinct sound. A great album by a great band that still shows promise and no sign of slowing down. "The Upside" showcases the band's talent and the direction they want to go in the realm of pop-punk.
