Basically, Brian adds the 'Smile treatment' to some of Gershwin's best known songs. In Smile fashion, the opening accapella of 'Rhapsody in Blue' reminds me of 'Our Prayer'. However, the album does not rely on Smile's quirkyness, but Brian does spice things up with his trademark arrangements - a banjo strum here, a bass harmonica there, etc.
Also of note, vocally; Brian sounds really good! He seems like he is in good spirits recording these classics his way. Speaking of 'his way' two tracks were unfinished Gershwin manuscrips that Brian completed.
I strongly reccomend this album. All the good things why you like Gershwin, why you like Brian Wilson, strike a unique balance. Not a cheesy product at all.
