Also by Oasis
So I requested a few Oasis singles so I could download the B-sides and mp3caprice made my day by importing this wonderfully comprehensive compilation of every Oasis single up to 1995! It includes the singles from all but their final album. If you are familiar with the compilation "The Masterplan" then you already know several of these tracks. Here's a breakdown of my faves.
singles from "Definitely Maybe"
- "Take Me Away", an acoustic song with lead vocals from Noel Gallagher. Bittersweet melody and lyrics, kind of slow and sad. A bit of a Beatles reference with the lyric "I'd like to be under the sea" (from the Octopus's Garden"). "D'Yer Wanna Be a Spaceman" (Noel on vocals again) is a particular favorite, an upbeat acoustic tune about remembering the dreams of childhood.
singles from "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?"
- If you have "The Masterplan" than you already know the three wonderful B-sides from "Some Might Say". "Acquiesce" is one of these three and one of my favorite Oasis songs, one of the few with Liam and Noel Gallagher both singing lead. The title track from that compilation, "The Masterplan", is a must-have; beautiful.
singles from "Be Here Now"
- "The Fame", "Flashbax", and "Sad Song" are all sung by Noel, but "The Fame" might have been a little better off had Liam done the lead vocals; it's more in Liam's usual style, faster and more rock. Still a good song though. "Flashbax" is also Noel but better suited to him; love the lyrics, "In my well-paid opinion, these things they really don't matter, but from my crystal gazing eye... etc" Love the whistling section too. "Sad Song" is exactly that, and just gorgeous.
singles from "Heathen Chemistry"
- now, this album is currently my favorite by Oasis, and the B-sides from its singles are no exception. "Just Getting Older" and "Idler's Dream" are a perfect pair. Seriously, like, sending-goosebumps-down-your-arms perfect. And I almost forgot "Shout It Out Loud" - beautiful, powerful, soul-reaching...typical Noel Gallagher stuff ya know, lol.
So those are my favorites, and that's just a sampling of what's on this compilation. There also a lot of good live versions as well as some interesting covers! "My Generation" is actually pretty good. Anyway, this album rocks! Oasis Forever!
