There are lots of great performances on this tribute to the Grateful Dead. Warren Zevon always steals the show. But Bruce Hornsby, a temporary member of the Dead, knocks it out with his arrangement of "Jack Straw". It has all the spirit of the original tune, with the piano perfection of Hornsby's own style.
There is a big flavor of country here, spotlighted with Lyle Lovett's "Friend of the Devil" and Dwight Yokam's "Truckin'". Elvis Costello makes "Ship of Fools" sounds like it was written just for him.
A good variety of styles, a classic selection of material and some great performances make this an excellent tribute album, one of the better ones at a time when everyone seems to be getting one. It's a great celebration of great music. I find myself listening to some of these more than the original, abs I think after a few listens, something on this album will grab you like that too.
