JF1971
More intellectual and sophisticated than their two first LP's, the eponymic third album from Deep Purple marks the last attempt to explore baroque rendition of British pop rock. At the time of its release in 1969, founding member Jon Lord (keyboard), Ritchie Blackmore (guitar) and Ian Paice (drums) are already aware of the new direction(s) they want to pursue. And this path require to leave behing their two fellows Rod Evans (vocals) and Nick Simper (bass). In less than two years of existence, Deep Purple has made three albums and the time has come for them to print their mark in the rock history. With retrospect, the Deep Purple album foreshadows the next opus Jon Lord will lead the band into: The Concerto for Group & Orchestra. This is particularly obvious with the last album track "April", a lengthy poetic piece on the most significant month in Deep Purple's history.
