The Kooks' first album, "Inside In/Inside Out", was pretty good. Focusing mostly on frontman Luck Pritchard's voice, the emotions it evoked coupled with some good guitar riffs were, by all accounts, a succes. It's exactly the type of indie rock that is achieving its highest highs at the moment.
However, "Inside In/Inside Out Acoustic" is a bit of a disillusion, it seems. I bought it, wanting to hear what The Kooks sounded like live in preparation for a concert I was going to go see them at. The thing I immediately noticed is that Pritchard's voice sounds completely horrible, like he's lived in the desert for the last five days. Naïve, one of The Kooks most well-known songs sounds croaky from beginning to end, and the chorus highs seem unreachable for the main man, instead sounding like their being sung by a 15-year old choir boy who's voice is cracking constantly.
Even the accompanying guitars just doesn't seem like they're being used very well. Obviously, studio versions of songs get cleaned up dramatically, but The Kooks' renditions of their own songs just sound bad, like they're some incapable cover band. It's altogether disappointing. Do not buy this album if you wish to keep up pretence that The Kooks are great live; stick to their studio albums and enjoy the songs that way. This album is not to be recommended.
