The Presidents of the United States of America are definitely a band that has never taken themselves very seriously, and this single is absolute proof. "Lump", first and foremost, is a great, fun rock song. It's catchy, has some great guitar work and starts off with a steady drum beat that builds to the main chorus. It's title comes from a benign tumor that the band's lead singer Chris Ballew had, combined with a vision of a swamp woman he had. It seems to tell of a dead woman's corpse in a swamp, and perhaps the singer has fallen in love with what's left of her.
This is really just a fun rock song, the meaning is unimportant, it's just catchy and fun to listen to. "Weird Al" Yankovic did a parody called "Gump" based on the film "Forrest Gump" that was a small hit, and the band liked it so much, they started incorporating bits of it into their performance of this song, which says a lot for how cool this band is. The second song here is "Carolyn's Bootie", another goofy song, this one an R-rated rock tune about the singer's girlfriend's butt, being descriptive about it, and what happens to him when he sees it. This is not nearly as good as "Lump", but it's a solid musical performance, good enough to be a b-side track. This is more than worth it for the must-have "Lump", which is a good entry point into a band with a ton of fun songs.
