What makes "painful" so brilliant is that it captures the rise and fall of emotions. What I mean by this is that it goes from calm to choas in steady builds and then bursts into uncontrollable noise. It's like a musical depiction of looking for peace while dealing with sadness, anxiety, and anger. All if the tension and emotion in this album is so volitile and expressed through raging almost uncontrollable noise.
This is an album that seems pretty out there unless you have expirienced a wide array of emotions all at one time. If you view if in this context it goes from noise to vivid impressionism. And I love that all the while, the vocals rarely match the intensity of the music surrounding them which can be taken as a metaphor for being drowned out by all the commotion.
This album really does embody what yo la tengo has always been known for in the sense that it juxtaposes texture and emotions together that seem like polar opposites and makes then coexist together. This leads to an interesting and satisfying listening expirience for listeners.
