This is Warren Zevon at the top of his game. He'd kicked his habits, beaten his demons, and was ready to let it rip. Most of his later live shows were solo, or minimalized, so this is something of a rare treat. Zevon is a fantastic performer in any situation, but with a full band behind him here, he really cute loose and rocks out.
"Excitable Boy" is a great example of all this. Zevon shouts the title at the end of the chorus, excitedly! You've never heard such joy from a song about a deranged serial killer. But that's Zevon, excited, full of joy, but also sarcastic, smart, funny, and more than a little strange.
Werewolves of London is probably his most well known song, he changes it slightly for every city. It always gets a great reaction, you can feel the energy of the crowd feeding Zevon, and vice versa. It's pure fun.
Another song was changed slightly as well, but not because of the crowd. Zevon had gone through some addiction issues, and beaten them. There was a line in "Poor, Poor Pitiful Me" that went "I've got a 38 special up on the shelf/If I start acting stupid, I'll shoot myself". Having a new outlook on life now, he changed it here to "I've got a 38 special up on the shelf/And I don't intend to use it on myself". This was a new, energetic artist who has a new joy in life, and in his artistry, and it comes through in what he plays and how he plays it.
Zevon debuted two new songs on this live album, "Stand in the Fire" and "The Sin". I wouldn't say either is amongst his best, but they fit in well here. He also did a fun cover, "Bo Diddley's a Gunslinger". If you listen to the album, you start to believe he can play anything, and play it well.
Of course his biggest hits are the highlights. "Lawyers, Guns, and Money" has a bigger punch to it live, with a full band than a studio track could convey. "Poor Poor Pitiful Me" is a lot of fun as well. This remastered edition has four tracks that weren't on the original; "Johnny Strikes Up The Band", "Play It All Night Long", "Frank and Jesse James" and "Hasten Down The Wind". These are great additions to an already great album, not just tacked on side tracks, but really great songs that any Zevon fan will really appreciate.
This is a great set, full of energy, and a great testament to what an amazing performer Warren Zevon was. His solo shows are great, but this full band performance is a timeless all-out rock concert. A great find for old and new Zevon fans.
