Also by Lady Gaga
An effective piece of pop satire that manages to both live within the trends it emulates while simultaneously commenting on them. Perhaps in years to come, people will look back at Lady Gaga's rise to stardom with this record and see just how brilliantly she's duped them. But, for the time being, I suppose, we'll let them continue to marginalize her due to their lack of understanding of the intent of her work. And, she's perfectly fine with that. Gaga, on this record, triumphantly soars over layers of synths like a pop/rock pro, creating something intellectual that's ultimately grounded in making art out of artifice. There'll be nothing quite like the first time I heard this record at the age of 14. Something about it resonated with me in a way that I can't quite describe. I could sense the purposefully detached narrative she had constructed. I intuitively knew where she was going with this and I thought she was brilliant for doing so. I still do.
