British Prog Metallers Haken keep on evolving with each album, and this new 2018 release is no exception. It is hard to compare them to a certain prog group, since they have developed their own style. This is a more aggresive album than their very good previous album "Affinity" which had a more commercial appeal. It is also a more diverse and shorter album which is good in order to be able to digest the plethora of sounds. It takes several listens to appreciate all the musical work put into "Vector".

The album opens with the short instrumental song "Clear" which leaves you wanting for more.

"The Good Doctor" starts off with riffs and melodies similar to Muse. The middle section has the characteristic complex odd time signatures and aggresive guitars.

"Puzzle Box" has some familiar Haken melodies and one of the outstanding songs. Past the 2 minute mark and enter a crushing complex odd time signature interval. Vocal harmonies and keyboard textures are the highlight.

"Veil" the longest song and a strong one also. Opens with a soft piano and vocal as a prelude to the main theme which also has Muse influences. Some aggresive vocals before the hook filled chorus. Guitars sounding like motorcycles or electric saws give it the aggresiveness before returning to a mellow tone.

"Nil BY Mouth" another instrumental web of complex instrumentation. Sounds as if one were inside a video game trying to find a way out to escape. Definitely takes many listens to be able to appreciate all the sounds.

"Host" the slowest song, has a different mood and gives you a break from all the previous aggresiveness. Reminds me of The Pineapple Thief.

"A Cell Divides" again has some Muse influence. Probably the most comercial song of the album. It is an intense song. To end the album with this song makes it seem that there should be a continuation of more music.

This Deluxe Edition has an instrumental version which is nice to appreciate more their intrinsic musical work. A definite buy for Haken fans and prog metal followers.
