Shedding some of his folk appearance, Shawn Mullins brings us a somewhat mass focused album with Beneath the Velvet Sun,including a rhythm more closing resembling pop/alternative than the previous folk sounds. That being said is no surprise that songs like Everywhere I Go (the flagship of this album), Valentine and Santa Fe were mostly heard in the radio waves than any of the rest. Still, even with a more mature voice, refreshed vocals and appearance, it is easy to identify the base that every fan and follower of Mullins have come to expect of him, the melody of the folk. Inside that base we can find Lonesome, I Know you Too Well (a beautiful song to wake up in the morning to), the more country Somethin' to Believe In (featuring his always welcomed namesake, Shawn Colvin) and Yellow Dog Song, that will remind anyone that he is still Shawn Mullins.
Beneath the Velvet Sun may be a departure from Soul's Core and even Better Days, but inside this commercial venture is still the same center we can come to expect from Mullins.
