When Kelly Clarkson broke onto the scene some time ago, the rags to riches winner of an American talent show who would have predicted that she would one day release a greatest hits album and that the album would contain genuine hit? Clarkson is, however, that very rare thing- a genuine talent and one should not be so churlish as to condemn her for the fact that she came from such an inauspicious start. Clarkson's voice is strong. Her phrasing and her ability to interpret a song are very good. This comes through on the song that began her career 'Since u been gone' but it is the power and precision of her voice that impresses, especially when on the limit. This music is in some ways vanilla. But that doesn't make it bad. Good vanilla is still good. There is also more than a hint of emotional dexterity displayed on a number of tracks like 'Because of you' and 'Already gone'. 'Breakaway' displays her talents best. Had you asked me if I was a Kelly Clarkson fan I might have said no, but this album has changed my mind somewhat and confirmed that Kelly Clarkson is someone to be taken seriously.
