Hot August Night is a live album that graced many a record library in the 1970's. Recorded live at the "Greek Theatre" on August 24 1972,it reached #1 in Australia in '73/74 where it remained for 29 weeks and furthermore remained in the top 20 until 1976. At one stage it was estimated that 1 in every 4 households had a copy of "a Hot August Night" in their music library. Neil Diamond is credited with writing all the songs on the album. Although Diamond started off in music as a performer, he gained more fame initially, as a song writer, but came into his own with "Solitary Man" in 1966. The album showcased his hits to the period and involved the audience even down to asking the welfare of the "tree people" who were sitting outside the theatre on the night. It is an excellent example of the crossover genre of music that Neil Diamond covers so well - pop, middle of the road and bluegrass/country
