With two of the best metal records under their belt already (“Kill’Em All” and “Ride the Lightning) Metallica was a thrash beast and with this album, “Master of Puppets”, they band created a thrash masterpiece for the next decades to come. The opening track “Battery” starts with acoustic guitars until the complete band enters and gives us an excellent fast thrash song worth listening to. Then, Master of Puppets comes with the iconic riff and the song is one of the best. The middle solo by James Hetfield is beautiful and melodic while Hammet’s solo is faster and more brutal. The build-up to the second solo is incredible and the rest of the song is simply a thrash classic. After this, “The Thing That Should Not Be” comes with a slower riff but not least heavy and brutal. An amazing slow heavy song that show us that Metallica doesn’t always need to go 250 bpm. Next, comes “Welcome Home (Sanitarium)” a ballad reminiscent of “One” or “Fade to Black” continue to show us that Metallica was from their early days to experiment with their songs and try to differentiate themselves from other thrash bands. To pick up the pace, “Disposable Heroes” starts and ends with a simple but excellent riff as James Hetfield sings about an soldier that dies in war and how he is only a machine born to kill and then, Metallica gave us “Leper Messiah” a song that shows the hate for priest that promise heaven for some money and also features(in my opinion) one of the best solos from Kirk Hammet with him using sweep picking. The instrumental of the album “Orion” is probably one of the best in metal, showing us how amazing was Cliff Burton on bass guitar. The middle section with the iconic riff and his solo after Hammet’s solo in the middle section is probably one of his finest. Last but not least, “Damage Inc” starts with a strange intro that turns into a fast thrash song that it’s excellent as the album’s closing track. In conclusion, anyone that enjoys thrash metal should listen Metallica’s opus magnus.
