This is the breakthrough album of the great Harry Nilsson. For the first time he brings (with the help of producer Richard Perry) more elements of rock into the mix. This is the album that garnered Nilsson several Grammy nominations and gave him his first #1 single with the cover of Badfinger's "Without You".
He took what was originally a pedestrian folky love song and turned it into an aching anthem of longing, love, and despair. Although best known for this cover, there are great moments of Harry Nilsson songwriting here, as well. There is the fun, light-hearted "Coconut" that became another signature song for Nilsson. Once again it showcases his vocal prowess, albeit in a completely different way than "Without You", proving his great vocal diversity. "Gotta Get Up", "Driving Along", and "Down" are more rousing strong original compositions showcasing his melodic skills and vocal chops. More than enough highlights and minimal filler make this a great work of the early 70's, even if the #1 single was not included. I hope Harry gets the due he deserves by a whole new generation, at some point.
