Harry Nilsson had one of, if not the, best singing voice of the late 60's and early 70's. Yes, there were Lennon/ McCartney and Brian Wilson & family (all extremely talented singers), but Nilsson's vocal range (both in number of octaves he could reach and the crazy variety of sounds and styles he could muster) put him in a league of his own. Even Lennon and McCartney acknowledged this by calling Harry their favorite "group". The breathtaking beauty of his vocal performance on "Without Her" alone is worth the price of admission. Don't be surprised if tears come to the eyes. But, also checkout what he could do with the Beatles early catalog on "You Can't Do That", WOW! While Tina Turner ripped through "River Deep, Mountain High" originally, Harry Nilsson takes it to a whole new place. He was an amazing songwriter, too, despite his two best known tracks being cover versions. Not only was the aforementioned "Without Her" a Nilsson original, but there is his autobiographical "1941" which takes the melancholy subject of his familial upbringing and actual manages to add whimsy to the proceedings through his one of a kind scat singing. While he would reach much further acclaim in the subsequent years of his career, this debut album shows the budding talent of one of the all time greats, who is, sadly, all but forgotten today.
