In 1967, California & Colorado based Poco practically pioneered and invented the 'country-rock' sound of the late 1960's. The original Poco (Richie Furay, Jim Messina, Rusty Young, George Grantham & Randy Meisner) had a clear vision of what they were doing; carrying on a legacy that Buffalo Springfield has started. Now based in Nashville and after decades of releasing quality recordings, "Running Horse" is the first full length studio CD by Poco in 13 long years.
Nashville producer Michael Clute did an excellent job on this LP. The CD opens with Rusty Young's super catchy "One Tear At A Time". Long standing Poco guitarist Paul Cotton's "Everytime I Hear That Train" is a fantastic emotional track. Poco's long time bassist Jack Sundrud weighs in with the most infectious track "Shake It"; which sounds the least Poco-ish. Rusty's "If Your Heart Needs A Hand" takes aim at the ballad side of Poco. Awesome "That's What Love is All About" is composed by Young and Little Feat/Pure Prairie League vocalist Craig Fuller.
The musical quality of this CD is outstanding; compared to their contemporaries Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and The Eagles. For reasons beyond comprehension, success has somehow always eluded Poco. This record stands up to being one of their very best! Rusty, Paul, Jack & drummer George Lawrence deserve a lot of kudos! Buy it!!
