What a pleasant surprise to find this italian prog band called Kingcrow. "The Persistance" is their latest release (2018). It is kind of difficult to put a musical style or category to them since they adapt different styles into their music. They have an ambient, dark, and moody style, while injecting metal riffs with their guitars. For moments (in the instrumental sections) the band sounds like Long Distance Calling and sometimes Haken.
"Drenched" starts off with an atmospheric mood and then enter the aggresive metal guitars with odd time signatures and then giving space to the vocals to enter. Great opening track.
"Closer" keeps the ambient mood going but this time with an odd time guitar riff. Nice dark moody tune and vocals are right on.
"Everything Goes" another nice atmospheric track. Lots of keyboard pads, textures, and loops, but also permiting the metal side to come in and share this space. Enjoyed this one very much.
"Folding Paper Drems" is another tune that is characteristic of this release to later evolve into a harder theme with orchestral keyboard background and guitar soloing. Ending the song with a reprise style of the begining but with all the band.
"Night's Descending" is another of the stronger songs and favorites. It has good vocal harmonies going along with an acoustic and electric guitar background. The lead vocal has a melancholic style while the background vocals are responding to its inquiries.
Very good prog album. Different styles which are welcomed and make it a delightful listen. Good production and I enjoy that there are no accents in the voice. Hopefully they can get more exposure and become more popular. They deserve a chance.
