After an almost 20 year hiatus, Walter Becker and Donald Fagen return with a stunning eclectic album. This cd contains everything from R & B flavored backbeats to complex jazz influenced grooves. The lyrical content of the majority of the songs are as sharp and witty as ever, assumingly mostly derived from the penmanship of Mr. Becker. Their sense of humor never is boring, despite the complexity of the serious music written for this cd.

'Gaslighting Abbie' starts the cd cd off with a tale of a man and his mistress; scheming to make his wife think she is going insane. Saxophonist Chris Potter lays down a mean tenor sax on this track. 'What A Shame About Me' is next, the lead off single from the album. Drummer Michael White lays down a stunning groove under Donald Fagen's Fender Rhodes and tasty guitar licks from Becker.

The title track features the 1st appearance of current drummer Keith Carlock. The song appears to be in 6/4 time, which is not a normal time signature for Steely Dan. 'Janie Runaway' is another tale, similar to their 'Hey Nineteen', of an underage girl who finds a sugar daddy. 'Jack Of Speed' is the completion of an unfinished older song they played on earlier tours, with a rare Becker lead vocal.

'Cousin Dupree' was another single released from the cd, a great infectious groove and memorable choruses. 'Negative Girl' features studio ace drummer Vince Calaiuta and apparently cut the quickest of all the tracks. 'West Of Hollywood' ends the album that also features Chris Potter's excellent sax work.

All and all, a fantastic comeback record! Buy it, buy it, buy it!
