So, if you want to know what exactly this Oasis "Live and Unplugged on MTV" record is before you download it (which I highly recommend!)...here's a little history. It's an 'unofficial release' (if you know what I mean) from an acoustic concert held in August 1996 at the Royal Festival Hall in London, noted for the fact that Noel Gallagher, usually lead guitarist, sings lead in the absence of his brother Liam. Liam was reportedly unable to perform due to a sore throat, as Noel mentions on the first track. The behind-the-scenes gossip claimed that Liam refused to do the gig after having had a row with Noel, he did in fact show up at the concert and was seen drinking and smoking in the balcony, and heckling the band during their performance. But if all this dishy backstory hasn't grabbed your interest yet let me assure you, the music is well worth listening to on its own merit.
This was one of the first gigs where Noel really got to show off his talent as lead singer, doing songs that had previously been recorded only by Liam. It received a lot of critical acclaim for this and deserved every bit of it IMO. A lot of these are tracks from Oasis's "Morning Glory" album (e.g. "Hello") and some really great B-sides as well (e.g. "Listen Up"). I consider myself a pretty committed Oasis fan and generally feel that although Liam has the better voice (particularly suited to the more rock n roll songs), Noel's the better singer. These versions by Noel are quite different than most other Oasis recordings from the 1990's and they at least rival the album versions in quality. Highly recommend this "Unplugged" album.
One of my favorites that you don't hear too often (especially by Noel) is "Round Are Way", I love the way he transitions into "Up in the Sky" to finish it. And also love "Whatever" with the original "all the young blues" ending (not present on the official release of the song). The harmonica all through this album is awesome, I haven't found any other recordings like it. Definitely take note of the harmonica on "The Masterplan", awesome song anyway and this one is a very unique recording.
Five stars, I highly recommend this "Live and Unplugged on MTV" album from Oasis, both for the interesting scandal associated with it(!) and besides, the music is just plain good.
