Being a fan of Journey, one of my favorite groups, it has been a long wait to hear some new music from Steve Perry. After the release of the album by Journey "Raised on Radio" Steve Perry's musical style kept on going more mellower and getting stuck in the ballad adult contemporary style. "Traces" is a slow ballad filled album. It is one for the fans. If an unknown 68 year old singer released this album, I doubt many would pay attention. But since it is Steve Perry he has much spotlight attention, being one of the best rock voices of the 80's. His appearance looks good for his age and his voice too. But die hard Journey fans expect a lot from him. After so many years of waiting one would think that there would be some good hooks and nice melodies, but this isn't the case. Most songs are weak as to an accesable tune, but this album is not about that. It is an album of a lost relationship and remembering a lost loved one. It is a personal record for him, and that is what he wanted to sing about. So that is fine since it is his decision, but this isn't exactly what fans were expecting.

The opening track "No Erasin'" is one of the weakest songs. I think the album should have started with something more upbeat. This song sets the tone for the rest of the album. Perry's voice is raspy and it sounds like he would not be able to hit those high notes he once did some 30 years ago. It sounds at what it is: an older man with a good voice but not great.

Song #2 "We're Still Here" starts off with Perry's voice much atop of the rest of the instruments. It is soft adult contemporary song with an ok chorus.

"Most Of All" also starts with an acappela style with a soft piano background. This song sounds develops into a soft R&B style.

"No More Cryin'" another single released before the album. It is a bluesy song with an soft ok chorus.

Ballad #5 is "In The Rain" with a chorus that sounds like his voice is cracking.

The song that I would recommend comes at track #6: "Sun Shines Gray" which is the most upbeat of the album (and with which he should have started the album). It has more of the Steve Perry sound one would expect.

The rest of the songs are more of the same. Slow ballads and no melodies that I can keep remembering.

The mix is well done since it presents Perry's voice with much presence. I really looked forward to this album, but didn't expect it to be so dull.
