Following their amazing self-titled debut, Young the Giant had a lot to live up to. But whereas their debut felt unique and original, this one feels like it wants to be everything else out there. Nothing is really bad about this album, it's just disappointing after the impression made by their first.
So taking the album on it's own merits, Young th Giant delivers with catchy choruses, and danceable melodies. "Anagram" will get you bouncing, "Crystallized" will get you dancing. "Firelight" and "Waves" are both worthy of radio airplay. But nothing really tells you that any track could not have been done by any other indie rock band out there today.
Most bands tend to go through the sophomore slump with their second album, and quite honestly, this is better than most. I just hope this is a band fumbling to find itself than one who has become complacent and ok with just being ok, because their debut showed awesome potential. I'm hoping this becomes a footnote when the story of their career is told.
