This album really does represent the high watermark for Alison Krauss and Union Station. Some people thought that Krauss's other collaborative work would detract from her ongoing work with Union Station. This album refutes that proposition categorically. Even to the casual observer one can detect a real process of maturation with Krauss's voice. Its fully range was fixed perhaps ten years ago but there is a tonal nuance that has developed in recent years and a elegance of phrasing that is truly remarkable. Added to this of course is the absolute musical authority of the band. The musical skill and precision is remarkable. What always impresses about a Union Station recording is the fact that you are moved around in musical space- from the spare and gritty 'Dustbowl children' to the haunting 'Lie awake' to the mesmeric 'Miles to go' you are transported to very different but equally relevant parts of the musical landscape. For bluegrass fans this is a must buy but this album has a much wider appeal. It will attract people who have an interest in country music and Americana but also those who just appreciate harmonies and outstanding musical ability. This record does on one level make easy listening. You could choose to play it in the background and let it wash over you. It wont offend. On the other hand, give it the time and attention that it deserves and you will be rewarded by a multi layered and complex experience that will leave melodic nuggets embedded in your consciousness. This album is a simply sublime example of Alison Krauss and Union Station at their very best and I sincerely recommend it to you.
