Epica - Requiem For The Indifferent. Epica is basically a legend of European symph-metal at this point in their careers. After 5 full-lengths and a mammoth live CD, they really have had time to hone their skills. And while the uber-talented (not to mention educated) gentlemen and lady in Epica may be at the height of their fame, unfortunately this album feels like a small step down for them.
Maybe it's just because their previous effort, 2009's "Design Your Universe" was one of the strongest albums in the genre, but "Requiem for the Indifferent" just feels very unsatisfying after repeated listens. This is not to say it's a bad album - you could do much worse (MUCH worse) in the genre of symphonic metal; but this almost feels like a band that's getting tired of what they're doing. There are no real jaw-droppers on this record, which is such a shame because there were a few of them on their last record.
The album also feels a little mellower, a little less frantic than it's predecessor, with more ballads (which are still very good) and less in-your-face rock-outs. But it's still worth checking out. As always, Epica's lyrics are very positive and you feel pretty great after listening to any of their albums. Just don't expect to be blown out of the water with this release. 3/5
